这次小编给大家科普的是现在当红移动出行行业的领头Uber公司,大家可以稍作参考,或者可以用来作为雅思写作的举例,也可以补充一下现代的一些行业知识。
Talking about Uber, the popular mobile cab service in the present day, the founder of it was called Travis Kalanick. However, people usually judge him by using the word “asshole”, and yes he is.
His irregular behavior and his
violation to the laws and rules bring Uber an amazing expanding speed,
and troubles in the meantime. That’s the way he does.
You might fail the examination at your
23 year old, you might lose your girlfriends or boyfriends at your 23
year old. But Kalanick, he came across much more things than you were.
At his 23, he got into a trouble: his company was sued by 30 media giants, asking him 250 billion dollars as a charge fee. Yes, it is 250 billion, which could be used to buy the whole Alibaba or Facebook, not to mention Taobao or Baidu.
Here is how things went. When studying computer at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles),
Kalanick made acquaintance with some genius in his department. Then
they dropped out of their college and ran a company which is a software
called Scour for P2P downloading.
(The couple on the left are the parents of Kalanick who subsidized Scour a lot.)
(Although Kalanick was standing in the middle of the photo, he was not the CEO.)
Once the Scour was issued,
it quickly became a scholastic hit. College students used it happily to
download pirated video and music. Also, his company got a great amount
of risk investment.
Next, MPAA (motion Picture Association of America), RIAA (Recording Industry Association of America) and NMPA (National Music Publishers Association) sued Kalanick’s company for infringement of copyright and charged for 250 billion dollars. Then, Scour was bankrupted.
The failure of Scour didn’t stop Kalanick,
he found some top executives to form a new company. After a few months,
he found the investor called Daniel Lewin and they decided to have a
meeting for the final decision. Daniel went from Boston to Kalanick’s
company by plane at September 11, 2011 and then everyone knows what
happened that day.
(This is Daniel Lewin, the investor of Kalanick’s new company.)
(We can still see his name on the monument of 9.11. )
The investment failed. Kalanick and his fellows get into the financial trouble again. This time, he had a new idea —— not to pay personal income tax for the employees, in order to save a lot of money. Later, IRS ( Internal Revenue Service ) came
to Kalanick and left him two choices: prison or penalty. Kalanick had
no way to fix it and gathered the money and hand it over. After a few
year, his company was purchased by Mark Cuban with 23 billion dollars and finally Kalanick earn his first vast sums.
After that,
Kalanick spent totally one year for traveling, He felt boring at the
second year and he decided to do business again. In his tour, kalanick
found that there are difficulties of calling cabs in many countries and
he locked the cab industry as his target. Later, he found some partners
and they form a company for calling cabs then named it Ubercab.
(These four guys were the founder of Uber. )
Firstly, they began at San Francisco. Then, as usual, they got the government prohibition for lacking operational qualification of cab. However, while everyone considered it a death of the company, Kalanick thought happily that the government stop it and it can succeed. He changed the name into Uber.
To improve the bad image of Uber, Kalanick hired David Plouffe to fix it.
(David Plouffe, the counselor of Obama.)
In Washington, he
tried to mobilize the masses for lifting the ban. The ban was ended up
with nothing definite after the mayor’s mailbox was full.
In London and Paris,
the furious cab drivers protested against Uber and held a large-scale
strike. The citizens could not get a cab from the street so they
downloaded Uber to call cabs. The strike turned into a free promotion
for Uber.
Through various kinds of method, Uber
had expanded to more than 50 countries. Kalanick would face more and
more resistance and he would enjoy them.
Although what he said brought troubles to Uber but Kalanick doesn’t care about it. As for this, Mark Cuban left an amazing comment: He just want to fight, not to win.
